By Sharda ten Hove on 22 August 2012

Oatmeal is a so called Superfood, it contains high levels of protein and fiber (beta-glucan which has beneficial effects on cholesterol levels) and low levels of fat. The porridge is easy to digest yet will give you a satisfied feeling. It stabilizes blood sugar and reduces risk of diabetes. Furthermore it prevents against breast and other hormone-related cancers as well as heart diseases. If you are gluten-sensitive than you should have no problem with oatmeal. However if you are gluten intolerant than it is best to buy gluten free oatmeal at your wholefood store as oatmeal contains a protein called Avenin which can become toxic for Avenin-sensitive people.

Organic oatmeal with cooked apple and cinnamon

Peel the apple, cut it in 4 and remove the core, then cut the apple in slices or small parts
Cook the apple with the water and cinnamon. When it comes to a boil, add the oatmeal.
Add little by little while stirring until you get a thick enough porridge.
Let it cook on low heat for 2 to 3 minutes and add stevia, maple syrup or any other sort of sweetener you prefer.

* Stevia is a natural sweetener, calorie-free and 300 times sweeter than sucrose, calorie-free and no glycemic index therefore regulating your blood sugar level.
* Instead of sweetener you can also cook raisins or cranberries with the porridge. Together with the apple it will give a sweet taste.
* If you want a creamier porridge than you can use almond milk or rice milk instead of water.
